Review

I read this book as a buddy read with my fellow bookstagram friends; and im glad I did as it made this book more interesting!

When I began reading this book, my initial thoughts were ''geez, how depressing are these characters!" The characters in this book literally sucked the happiness out of me and honestly, made me feel a little down and depressed. I guess that was what Alice Feeney had intended whilst creating such characters for this twisted plot.

Pushing those feelings aside, I continued to persevere with the book; firstly because it was a buddy read and I needed to keep up with the group discussions and secondly, I wanted to find out if my theory was correct. As to my expectations, my theory on who the murderer/s were, was correct as this book, to me anyway, was trying very hard to be like Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. I mean, I appreciate that it was similar to that book as Christie's version is my absolute favourite book of her that I've ever read!

But the similarities between the two books were just too much.

The murderer (not giving this away incase you want to read it), the poems, the dysfunctional family and EVEN THE SETTING!...this has Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None AND Crooked House all over it. I think that's why I found this book a little disappointing and a little too predictable. The only difference between Feeney's book and Christie's, was that Feeney added a little paranormal aspects to the plot. I won't say anymore as it will give too much away. Also another thing I wanted to add was the flashbacks! This story goes back and forth in time as the plot unfolds. I found the flashbacks to be mostly boring, dragging and a little pointless. The only necessary flashback was towards the end of the story when the plot was wrapping up. I can't say too much about this book without giving away spoilers, however I will say this. This book is a great read for those who enjoy whodunnit's and thrillers. Although I personally didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked, I would still recommend this book to friends. The writing was excellent; very descriptive which made it easy for me to envision. If the book had a bit more originality, I think I would've enjoyed it a little more. I think my problem is that Agatha Christie has set very high expectations for murder mysteries and whodunnits that I have become extremely critical when I read a book that's similar to hers LOL!

I hope you all enjoyed my honest review! Leave your comments below if you agree/disagree with what I have written. I'm always happy to hear other peoples opinions!

Until my next review,

Andrea.
